About
Celebrating 30-years of parent-run daycare and preschool, the Sandy Hook Child Care Center is a nonprofit center founded in 1980 by parents working at the James J. Howard Marine Sciences Laboratory.
Sandy Hook Child Care Center is located in a cheerful historic home with a large garden and play area on the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. We are a loving, affordable state licensed, nonprofit childcare and preschool program dedicated to the needs of infants, tots, and toddlers looking for a small, eco-friendly environment. The teacher to child ratio is very intimate, as our maximum capacity each day is 15 children.
Sandy Hook Child Care Center teachers take an individual approach with each child, fostering independence and respecting their emerging personality, talents, sensitivities, and abilities. The teachers develop routines that frame the day: clearing dishes, working the garden, enjoying a craft, reading, dancing, singing, and so much more.
The Center's environment is our curriculum, with age appropriate activities emerging as the children develop, based on reading, math, science, as well as their interests and the space around them. In these early years the emphasis is on play, movement, and developing relationships that foster a sense of comfort and security.
